Tunisia Desert Travel Guide

Everything you need to plan a smooth trip to the Tunisian Sahara — when to go, what to pack, visa and safety basics, and how to reach the desert.
Best Time to Visit
The ideal window is October to April. Days are mild (15-25°C), nights are cool, and the light is perfect for photography. Summer (June-August) is extremely hot — best avoided for daytime desert activities. Spring and autumn are the sweet spots.
How to Reach the Desert
- Via Djerba — island airport with international flights; gateway for 2-3 day Sahara circuits.
- Via Tozeur — desert airport for the western oases and Star Wars sites.
- Via Tunis — the capital, for longer circuits combining north and south.
- By road — Douz is about 5-6 hours from Tunis; Ksar Ghilane is reached by 4x4.
What to Pack
Warm layers for cool desert nights, light breathable clothing for the day, a scarf (chèche) for sun and sand, sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen, a hat, comfortable closed shoes, and a reusable water bottle. A power bank is useful at remote camps.
Visa & Entry
Many nationalities — including EU, UK, US and Canadian citizens — can enter Tunisia visa-free for up to 90 days. Always confirm the current rules for your passport before travelling.
Money & Costs
The currency is the Tunisian Dinar (TND). Carry some cash for remote areas, as card payment isn't always available at camps. A 2-day desert tour runs €120-180; a 3-day circuit €250-300.
