Best Time to Visit the Tunisian Desert
Timing your Tunisian desert trip right makes the difference between a magical experience and an uncomfortable one. Here is what each month is like and when to go for the best weather, the best light and the best prices.
Season Overview
The Tunisian Sahara has two main seasons for travelers:
- High season (October to April) — mild days (15-25°C), cool nights (5-12°C), clear skies and comfortable conditions for all desert activities.
- Summer (June to August) — extreme heat (40-50°C during the day), making outdoor activities uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous. Best avoided.
May and September are shoulder months — warm but usually manageable, with fewer crowds and lower prices.
The Best Months
October, November, March and April are the sweet spots. The weather is ideal (20-28°C days, 10-15°C nights), the light is perfect for photography, and tour prices are reasonable. December through February is also excellent, but nights can be surprisingly cold (down to 5°C), so pack warm layers.
When to Avoid
July and August are the months to skip. Daytime temperatures routinely exceed 45°C, and the Sirocco wind can bring sandstorms. Even camels slow down. If you must travel in summer, stick to very early mornings and evenings.
Month by Month
- January-February: Cool and dry. Days 15-20°C, nights can dip to 5°C. Excellent for hiking and photography. Pack warm layers for nights.
- March-April: Warming up. Days 22-28°C. Ideal for all activities. Spring wildflowers in the oases.
- May: Getting hot (30-35°C). Still manageable, fewer tourists, good value.
- June-August: Extreme heat (40-50°C). Not recommended for desert activities.
- September: Heat easing (35-38°C). Borderline — go early or late in the month.
- October-November: Perfect (22-28°C days). Peak comfort, excellent light. Date harvest season.
- December: Cool and festive. The Douz Sahara Festival takes place (camel races, folk music). Days 16-22°C.
Festivals & Events
