What to Pack for the Tunisian Desert

Desert travel gear on golden sand in Tunisia

Packing for the Sahara is about two things: protecting yourself from the sun by day and staying warm at night. This checklist covers everything you need for a 2 to 7-day desert trip, from clothing to camera gear.

Clothing

  • Warm layers for the night: a fleece or down jacket, long trousers and a warm hat. Desert nights drop to 5-10°C even in spring.
  • Light, breathable daywear: loose cotton or linen shirts and trousers. Light colors reflect the sun.
  • A desert scarf (cheche): essential for sun, sand and wind. Your guide may gift you one.
  • Swimsuit: for the Ksar Ghilane hot spring.

Footwear

  • Closed, sturdy shoes: hiking sandals or lightweight boots for dune walking and 4x4 stops.
  • Flip-flops: for the camp and the hot spring.
  • Avoid open sandals for dune walking — sand gets in and burns in midday heat.

Sun Protection

  • High-SPF sunscreen (50+) — the desert sun is brutal.
  • Good sunglasses (UV400) — glare from sand and salt flats.
  • A wide-brimmed hat or the cheche covering your head.

Tech & Camera

  • Camera + tripod for golden hour and night shots (see the photo guide).
  • Power bank — remote camps may not have charging points.
  • Headlamp or torch — camps can be dark at night.
  • Ziplock bags — protect electronics from sand.

Toiletries & Essentials

  • Reusable water bottle — water is provided but bring your own bottle.
  • Lip balm with SPF — dry desert air cracks lips fast.
  • Wet wipes — showers are limited at bivouacs.
  • Personal medication — pharmacies are far from the dunes.
  • Cash (Tunisian Dinars) — cards rarely work at camps.

What NOT to Bring

  • Heavy luggage: a small backpack or soft bag is better than a rigid suitcase for 4x4 transfers.
  • Expensive jewelry: sand gets everywhere and can damage it.
  • Too many clothes: you need far less than you think. Laundry happens between camp and beach.
