The 2-Day Sahara Escape
Perfect if you're based on the coast and short on time. Departs from Djerba.
Day 1
Leave Djerba in the morning, cross to the mainland and visit the troglodyte houses of Matmata. Continue through the ksour country near Tataouine, then reach your desert camp for sunset, dinner and an evening around the fire.
Day 2
Sunrise over the dunes and a camel ride, then drive to the Ksar Ghilane oasis for a swim in its natural hot spring before returning to Djerba in the evening.
The 3-Day Complete Circuit
The sweet spot — enough time for dunes, oases, mountains and Star Wars. Departs from Tunis, Sousse or Hammamet.
Day 1
Travel south via the holy city of Kairouan to Tozeur, with its vast palm grove and old brick medina. Overnight in Tozeur.
Day 2
By 4x4 to the mountain oases of Tamerza and Chebika, then the Star Wars sets at Ong Jmel and Mos Espa, across the Chott el Jerid salt lake to Douz. Sunset camel ride and a night in a desert camp.
Day 3
Visit Matmata, then the Roman amphitheatre of El Jem on the way back to your starting city.
The 7-Day In-Depth Sahara
For travelers who want to go slow and deep.
- Days 1-2: Tozeur, the palm grove, Chott el Jerid and the Star Wars sites.
- Days 3-4: A multi-day camel-trek bivouac from Douz or Sabria, riding between bivouacs.
